You can download some texture from deviantart.

much different, huh?

In this sample, I used paper texture.

To fill the effect, we need layer function.
Step :
1) Create new layer for background color.
2) Create another layer for texture.
  • In this step, the texture will lie on background.
3) Adjust texture layer properties from Normal > Overlay/Lighten/Multiply or any other properties
*different layer properties resulted in different effect*

4) [optional] adjust layer opacity

How to design booklet cover [5] : Content and Cover

Since, my booklet was created due to the concert event.
My booklet cover must be related to the concert theme.

Main theme : Infinite Love :)
This concert was held during February, the valentine period.

So...
Today's post will be on content, theme color and how to design booklet cover.
[If you were to design a black and white booklet cover, you can skip this post :P]

I prefer http://www.colourlovers.com/ for useful tool in selecting theme color

Explore through the website
And you will see how useful it is!

With this website, you can search the color palette based on your theme by search function.
This website won't give you one color and let you match by yourself.
But a palette of color that was mixed and match, a lot easier and reduce time in working!

What you can search in this website :

  •  Color name : Name that doesn't based on color theory but the feeling
    • ex. if you search 'love', result will be a red or pink one. while searching for 'sea' will give you a nice turquoise :)
  • Hexadecimal Color Code : If you have your desire color that you wanna use in your work but have no idea what color to match. You can input your hexadecimal code [obtained from PS] into this website and it will give you a hundred of matches sample.
  • Trends and Popularity in using palettes of the website.
  • Printing sample : A nice sample design based on color you choose.
  • Pattern : A background for your printing based on color you choose.

Grab your color palette!
Then, used it in your design.

If you need to work with this palette you choose for several times.
You may save your color using color ans swatch function.

First of all, open swatch panel by...
Open PS > Tool panel in the title bar > Window > Tick right mark on Swatches

Then, the swatches box will appear in you right hand side panel looks like this >

If I were to used this palette >>

rarity of salvation

I could grab my favorite color from http://www.colourlovers.com/ by clicking on desired palette.
And the website will give me a hexadecimal code needed in PS.

To input by hexadecimal color code in PS :

Now, your foreground color will set to your input color.
With this, we can use create swatch function to save the color.

Click on the red shaded button.
Only one click, your color will be saved.

A series paper sizes are the most popular paper size. Worldwide standard for home printers and scanners is A4 size paper. With the decreasing of number, the size of paper will be doubled.

How to select paper size for your booklet cover in Adobe Photoshop

Select > Preset
You can choose between U.S paper and International Paper.
Basically, we used International paper. [easier to set and understand :)]

International paper > select your paper size!
In this blog, we're using B5.

By the way. if you wanna customize by yourself.
I prefer the easy way to calculate your paper size in the following link...

From the calculated size, you can use it in PS by...
Select custom > and input your calculated Width and Height. :D

How to design booklet cover [3]

How to design booklet cover [3] : Set the color!

After you made a decision of how your work will be printed.
The next step of how to design booklet cover will be on how to set the color.

Tool  :

Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign :)
version is not specified but CS3 and above will be better
I'm using both of them in CS5 ver.

What color you need to be set?
I'm not talking about the color in your work/design.
But the colors of ink that need to be used.

The following covers are comparison of each type of color

Bitmap - black and white for xerox process

CMYK - for normal colored printing

Grayscale - normal black and white printing

You can see the different between these 3 process :D
Normally, printing business used CMYK.
CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black.
combination of these colors resulted a nice colored book

You may think that why don't we use gray scale to print a black and white work and just xerox it.
The answer is xerox process has low resolution and will not be able to print a detailed grayscale.

HOW TO SET >>

You can select the color from Color Mode:
select it based on your artwork!

Define the resolution also important...
300 pixels/inch suits for printed work.
while 72 pixels/inch suits for web design and computer graphic.

That's it for selecting color!
It isn't the end of how to design booklet cover.

So...
Let's begin!
HOW TO DESIGN BOOKLET COVER in 10 mins.
using Adobe Photoshop and Indesign.

First, you need to know about your printing.
You need to ask yourself these question

  • What is the size of your printing?
    • This will effect a lot in arranging texts and design a layout [This is essential! This will make suck content into something more interesting]
  • What kind of paper?
    • Different kind of paper, different color of paper [ex. green read, glossy, A4, colored paper] resulted different effect. With the same design and color, printed in different paper, some part of your artwork will be a thing called 'disaster'
  • Used color?
    • CMYK or Black and White need to be decided before designing process
  • Targeted Group & Content
    • When you're going to design anything, you need to know the content. Content and artwork must go in the same direction.
      • ex. Wedding ceremony booklet cover is a black and white and some sad design
    • Targeted group must be defined. People with different cultures or ages have different readability, layout and text arranging must be different.
This is first thing in how to design booklet cover. Decision is very important!
